Critical Knee Pain Mistakes That Keep You From Being Active, Strong, And Doing What You Love

Everyday we work with individuals to overcome knee pain and we’ve often found that there are a lot of misconceptions and false beliefs that can actually hold us back from living the life we want. The following are the five critical mistakes we see people make when trying to recover from knee pain and some tips on what you can do to avoid them.

1) Too Strong Of A Focus On The Knee

Pretty much all causes of (non-traumatic) knee pain is caused by issues somewhere else. Week hips, tight ankles, weak core all are primary contributors to knee pain and if they are not assessed and corrected - will lead to a life-time of on-again, off again knee pain that will eventually force you to give up all your favorite activities.

2) Steroid Injections

Steroid Injections are the ‘go-to’ treatment for many doctors when ‘treating’ knee pain. While the injections may help get you out of pain - the relief is temporary. Once the steroid wears off, the pain comes back. And you still can’t do the activities that you love. There are also many negative, long term side effects of steroid injections that they often forget to mention and lead to more pain and suffering later on. Utilizing more natural pain relief therapies will help you avoid harmful side-effects and get you back to being active, strong, and doing what you love.

3) Rest and Immobilization

For years, the go-to response for pain and injury (often told to them by their doctor) is to rest and take some pain pills and wait for the pain to go away on its own. Research has shown that prolonged immobilization of the injured area can lead to further damage while movement improves the health of the tissue, speeds healing time and protects our body from future injuries. The best thing you can do after suffering an injury is to get it moving.

4) Wait For It To Go Away On It’s Own

One solution a lot of people try is to just ignore it. The solution worked a little better in our 20’s and 30’s but as we age - waiting for the pain to go away is always a bad idea. The primary cause of arthritis and knee pain is poor movement that gets compounded by time. This means the longer we ignore it, the worse the problem becomes and the harder it becomes to fix. The best way to get back to doing what you love is to get started on a plan to get you moving and build strength so you can feel confident getting back to your favorite activities.

5) Costly and Debilitating Surgery

Surgery is an expensive, all-in treatment for knee pain that most likely isn’t necessary and can lead lead to unexpected consequences. Longer recoveries lead to missed days of work that cost you even more money than the already expensive surgery. Cutting through muscles and nerves can often contribute to other painful conditions. Not to mention that long term studies show that long term outcome of those who opt for surgery are EQUAL to those who do not get surgery.

Improving movement and strength is a much safer option that has benefits that extend into every aspect of your life.
