Three Frequently Overlooked Ways To Work, Sleep, and Exercise Without Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common condition that keeps a lot of people from being as active as they would like. For many, the pain may not be debilitating but makes it hard to work, sleep, and exercise without that distraction that keeps us from being able to fully enjoy those activities. A lot of people try stretching, going to the chiropractor, - which helps, but has failed to fully resolve the issue.

Today we discuss three frequently overlooked contributors to neck pain and what we can do to correct them when traditional therapies haven’t worked.

1) Breathing Movement Patterns

Improving breathing patterns is one of the most and commonly overlooked by doctors and insurance companied. Long periods of sitting, increased stress, and other daily habits can cause some people to be ‘chest breather's.’ Breathing through our chest causes an overutilization or our neck musculature - which overtime leads to chronic neck pain.

Learning to breathe through our abdomen and diaphragm my hold the key to solving your chronic neck pain. Watch the video below to see the difference in the two different breathing patterns.

2) Mid Back Mobility

Many people with neck pain will be very stiff in their mid back. Our bodies are incredibly smart, and when we lack range of motion in one area - it will compensate by increasing range of motion in another. When our mid backs are incredibly stiff due to long hours of sitting at a desk - more movement and force will be placed on our neck joints and muscles which - overtime - leads to chronic neck pain.

Improving mid back mobility is key to solving chronic neck pain.

3) Postural Strength

How we hold our bodies can determine how much force going through our joints which relates to how much neck pain we experience. When our postural muscles are weak, we aren’t able to properly hold our neck and head up - more force is placed on our neck joints and our neck muscles are required to hold more than they can handle - leading to neck pain.

Building strength in our postural muscles (Lx and Tx erectors) and posterior shoulders will prevent our neck from being overloaded and keep you pain free.
