As many people age, they start to develop arthritic changes in the spine. This process of bone growth narrows the canals where are spinal cord and nerve roots exit the spine. When these areas become compressed it can cause pain in the low back or down the leg which can make it very difficult to walk or perform our daily activities.

In this weeks article we cover three things you can do to help manage the symptoms of spinal stenosis and start you back on the road to recovery.

1) Reestablish and Maintain ‘Neutral Postures’

By neutral postures - we are referring to spinal positions that reduce and leg or radiating symptoms. This can include various spinal and pelvic positions or even things like lying on our stomach. Finding the position that eliminates symptoms and spending time in that position is the best place to start getting you back to the activities you love.

2) Decompression Exercises

Their are a few exercises and positions that help to ‘decompress’ our spine and take the load off of the irritating joint/discs/and nerves. These positions can help alleviate pain and are a vital part of returning to walking without pain. The ‘Park Bench Decompression’ exercise is a great place to start and is discussed in detail here:

3) Spinal Hygiene Exercises

The next step in overcoming pain caused by spinal stenosis is to build adequate strength and movement to take the load off of our spine entirely. We cover some of the best exercises to start with in a previous article which you can find by clicking here.
