Pain and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet - The Impact of Nutrition on Pain

We often view pain solely as a mechanical issue. Meaning that the pain we experience is directly related and proportional to the tissues damaged. But as pain science progresses we are finding that many lifestyle factors play a role in the pain level we experience as well. This is especially true for chronic pain where low level inflammation can impact the amount of pain we experience.

Today we speak with Dr. Jerome Craig about the impact nutrition can have on the pain we experience and learn more about the inflammatory diet. We sum up our convo here:

1. What Is the Anti-Inflammatory Diet?

The Anti-Inflammatory Diet is a way of eating that reduces systemic inflammation. It generally entails the removal of highly processed foods and sugars and promotes eating the way nature intended - with natural foods.

2. Why Are We Inflamed?

The Anti-Inflammatory Diet isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to nutrition. Determining the reason for our systemic inflammation will determine which foods are best for you to eat. An easy example is with SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). While the Anti-Inflammatory Diet generally encourages the increase consumption of vegetables, those with SIBO can actually have their symptoms aggravated with too many vegetables.

3. The Impact of Nutrition on the Pain We Experience

What we eat impacts the pain we experience in a number of ways.  Low level inflammation from a pro inflammatory diet causes consistent low level 'irritation' to our nerves causing them = to become ‘sensitized’. This means that these ‘sensors’ become more sensitive to the environment and will be triggered (and relay pain) with even less stimulation than before.
