Taking Advantage of Your PIP Coverage - How to Receive Chiropractic Care Following a Car Accident
After a car accident, many individuals delay getting the necessary care due to a fear of the cost. Many are unaware that they have access to an insurance that covers 100% of their medical expenses so that they can get the care they need with no out-of-pocket cost. It's called PIP Insurance and we cover it here.
Q: What is Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Insurance?
A: PIP is a medical insurance provided through your auto insurance. It is required on all auto policies in Oregon and covers up to $15,000 of ‘reasonable and necessary’ medical expenses following a collision. It also covers you if you were a pedestrian or bicyclist (Note: There is no PIP coverage for motorcycles)
Q: How do I use PIP?
A: Open a claim through YOUR OWN auto insurance (regardless of who is at fault). If you were not at fault, your insurance company will seek reimbursement through the at fault party's insurance.
Q: Will it raise my premium?
A: No! Your insurance company gets reimbursed from the at faults party’s insurance, meaning your premiums will not be raised if you open a PIP claim.
Q: The accident wasn’t my fault, am I still covered?
A: Yes! No Fault means that you will have PIP benefits regardless of who was at fault. Opening a PIP claim will not raise your premiums.
Q: If I was a passenger in the collision, am I still covered?
A: Yes! There is PIP coverage for all passengers in an accident. The claim would be opened through the PIP of the driver.
Q: What other benefits does PIP Coverage entail?
A: PIP can also cover you for loss of up to 70% of your wages (up to a maximum of $3,000/month). You must miss at least 14 days of work to trigger this benefit.
Q: What Information do I need to Get started?
A: To get started on your recovery, the clinic will need the following information.
- Insurance Company Name and Claim Number (PIP Claim - Not Auto Claim)
- Claim Adjuster's Name and Phone Number
- If applicable, the phone number and address of your attorney
That's it! All communication about care/payments will be handled by your doctor and insurance company.
